Sophie Hewey, FAE, HHAP
My name is Sophie Hewey and I’m a certified Fertility Awareness Educator and Sexual Health Educator. I received my education from Sarah Bly at The Well School of Body Literacy. I’ve been involved with Fertility Awareness in a professional capacity since graduating from The Well in 2023 and have been charting my cycles using FAM for 10 years. I became interested in deeper involvement with AFAP when I met several AFAP board members at the Justisse Fertility Awareness Educator Conference last November.
I’m excited about the prospect of serving on the AFAP board because this dedicated group has done so much for the secular FAM community in terms of public education and elevating professional standards. As the political climate continues to take its toll on the reproductive health landscape, I believe that the AFAP board has the unique opportunity to uphold our mission and to empower both educators and anyone navigating the spectrum of reproductive health care to wade through the weeds of information overload and rampant misinformation. AFAP is a place where folks can find clarity and connect with a community of FAEs who are dedicated to promoting scientific literacy and reproductive justice in times of deep instability. My vision for the AFAP board is to increase visibility of Fertility Awareness Educators whose work is rooted in the same values that AFAP upholds, as well as to continue to promote continuing education and community building for FAEs and other practitioners within the AFAP network. Continuing to grow into a robust community of folks from diverse backgrounds, languages, and life experiences feels increasingly important as well as helping to match folks seeking FAM education to the educators who can best fit their specific learning styles and needs.
As a board member, I would bring my excitement and enthusiasm to the work, as well as a commitment to carrying out the necessary tasks with enthusiasm. I’m eager to join the board because although teaching FAM itself is deeply fulfilling, I have a desire to work collaboratively with other FAM educators and to contribute to the efforts that we are all collectively striving for in pursuit of a future where reproductive justice and body literacy are accessible to all. My skills involve writing, administrative tasks, social media management, and email marketing.
Thanks for considering me for a board position!
Lana Joy Parra , BA, HRHP, FAE, Doula
As a 2022 graduate of the Justisse College Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner program and an FAE in private practice from 2022 to 2024, my commitment to body literacy and reproductive autonomy is deeply aligned with AFAP's mission and core values.
My journey in menstrual health began in 2010, when I was diagnosed with PMOS. After discovering more in the holistic health and body literacy movement, I set out to foster community and drive systems change at the intersection of menstrual health research, advocacy, and education between 2015-2018. While my focus shifted in 2018 to clinical training and building my practice, my passion for systemic transformation has only grown. Having been an AFAP member on and off since graduating, and as the current Executive Director of Justisse College, I am eager to step into a more active role to support our collective movement.
I envision AFAP's board guiding our field toward a transformative future where body literacy is universal and menstrual cycle health becomes a global standard of care. Recent data underscores a massive, growing need for longitudinal health tracking. FAEs are uniquely positioned to bridge this gap. We provide the human relationality, clinical rigour, and expertise needed to help clients synthesize longitudinal biomarker data alongside modern digital tools. I see AFAP playing a pivotal role in positioning certified FAEs as essential partners in the evolving women's health and femtech landscapes, ensuring our expertise is recognized and accessible. Fertility coverage is among the top three most requested employee benefits - I believe it's time for insurance providers to cover the work of FAEs, and I would like to see AFAP empowered to lobby for this in areas that best serve our members.
To support the board in realizing this vision, I bring a robust set of leadership and governance skills:
Governance & Leadership : Background in non-profit oversight, strategic planning, policy development, and utilizing frameworks like Non-profit Lifecycles to assess organizational readiness and guide growth transitions.
Collaborative Decision-Making : Certified trainer, facilitator, and practitioner with expertise in consent-based governance that mirrors AFAP's collaborative ethos.
Financial & Community Operations : Practical administrative experience managing budgets, financial stewardship, and membership systems through roles as Treasurer and Membership Coordinator within my intentional community.
It would be an honour to contribute my governance experience, systems perspective, and passion for FAE advocacy to the AFAP Board. Thank you for your consideration.
Denise Rodriguez , certified FAE, cycle and sexual health educator
Hi my name is Denise. I'm a Cycle and Sexual health educator certified through The Well School of Body Literacy. I've been a certified FAE for 2 years and in the cycle health space for 6 years. I run Eclipsic Herbs where I teach hormone health, cycle tracking, and herbalism. My work focuses on hormone health specifically. Getting the word out there that our hormones are central to our health and well being.
I joined AFAP last year as I've been striving to uplevel my work and profession. My goal this year was to provide education that was easy to understand while also including references and resources. This inclination towards research led me to join the research committee here. Where I've spent this year creating a easy to navigate research library for AFAP! I truly think that adding these resources helps add to our profession and credibility.
Through owning my own business and teaching I've gained experience in thinking outside the box, social media, community outreach, and event planning.
I think the board has been doing a great job at leveling up the organization. Going to conferences, info sessions, and releasing the new website. I think that is the momentum that we need and I would love to be a part of that brainstorming environment.
